Adhimadhuram or Licorice is the herb known by majority of people because of its use as one of the ingredients in Tea or Coffee powder. But our ancestors are even more familiar with the herb because they have used it in everyday cooking like Turmeric and Cumin.
This herb called as Adhimadhuram in Tamil, Licorice in English, Jethimath or Mulethi in Hindi.Its botanical name is Glycyrrhiza Glabra. Its roots, seeds, leaves are used for several diseases. Its seeds are white, red, and black in colour. This seeds are called as Gundumani in Tamil.
It usually grows in hill regions. Currently its cultivation is very less in India and it is imported from other countries. Thats why we will not be able to find even its leaf and complete plant photos in the internet. Only root photos can be found online.
Athimaduram is sweet in taste. Athimadhuram powder can be consumed directly with water or hot water. Its powder can be used to remove mucus in our throat and chest area. Its powder is mostly used to treat stomach ulcer and Indigestion.
It is also considered as a uterine tonic in menstrual irregularitis, and sterility. In Africa, its roots has been used against several eye diseases. Roots powder can also be taken as diuretic and as laxative.
