People are using so many herbal remedies such as Avarampoo (Senna Flowers), Keezhanelli (Country Gooseberry), and Naval Kottai (Java Plum seeds) for diabetes. Out of these, Senna flowers are providing good relief from Diabetes. But many of us are not aware of a herb Sirukurinjan. This herb is also called as Sugar Killer named after its properties.

Sirukurinjan is the Tamil Name. It is having Botanical name as Gymnema Sylvestre. There is no English name recorded for the plant may be because it was available only in India.

Sirukurinjan is a climber plant having light bitter and astringent taste. The entire plant including leaves, stems and roots are used as a remedy against Diabetes.

After chewing two leaves of Sirukurinjan, if we consume sugar, it would have no sweet taste. The reason for this plant behaviour is a chemical compount called as Gymnemic Acid available in the plant which deactivates the sweet taste receptors in our tongue. This acid also activate insulin secreting glands.

On one side, this plant powder reduce our interest on sweets. On the other side, it increases insulin secretion. By the way, this herb become Sugar Killer. Currently Scientists are continuing more research on this herb.
